The World Council of Churches (WCC) and United Bible Societies (UBS) held a leadership summit on 26 October, sharing words of hope amid ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and also discussing preparations for the WCC 11th Assembly in Karlsruhe, Germany in 2022.

The UBS and WCC leadership also discussed ongoing new joint teaching opportunities, the latest programmes at the Bossey Ecumenical Institute, and new joint publications to be released. Those gathered also discussed collaborative efforts pertaining to the United Nations presence of the two organizations.

WCC acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca expressed his gratitude for the sense of fellowship and fruitful collaboration between the two organizations, which have developed closer ties particularly in the past five years.

“As we walk together in fellowship, I see already the fruits of our collaboration reaching the grassroots, where people are meeting grave challenges and celebrating their joy in ways that are rooted in the Bible,” said Sauca. “When we pray together, we find even more hope being forged as we prepare for the 11th WCC Assembly and all the ways in which it will draw together our one human family.”

The Director General of UBS, Michael Perreau added: “We are seeing the world hungry for the hope-giving message of the Holy Scriptures. This creates opportunities for the Bible Societies and churches to cooperate in new and creative ways. We can let history influence us or we can influence history. Today’s summit was about the ongoing projects that will bring along greater understanding between Christian traditions to achieve these goals.”
