WCC NEWS: Intergenerational book event to dive deeper into the waves

The World Council of Churches (WCC) is inviting an intergenerational group to explore, critically analyze, and propose ways forward at a hybrid event of a deeper dive into the different voices represented in the youth publication “Let the waves roar.”

“Our history teaches us of the key contributions of young people in the fellowship. And so it is also important today not only to regard them as the future, but to listen to them and to take seriously their impulses and suggestions, as well as their experiences and fears,” says acting general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Ioan Sauca.

The book event is set to take place on 1 April 2022, 2:00pm-3:30pm CEST.

Selected young authors with balance regional representation, Bossey students, and intergenerational colleagues from the member churches and ecumenical partners will give critical feedback on the book, and suggest ways forward for the Fellowship on youth engagement in the ecumenical movement.

Joy Eva Bohol, WCC programme executive for youth engagement in the ecumenical movement, explains that “young people are creating waves and splashes in the ecumenical waters. As we journey together as a movement, as a fellowship, young people continually push us out of our comfort zones as a prophetic voice in the church and society.”

The 17 young people whose voices are heard in these pages represent eight regions and diverse church traditions. Another three chapters have been contributed by the editors and former WCC youth department staff. The book invites all generations to discern the signs of our times and to be proactive in our response to them.

Rev. Dr Benjamin Simon, WCC programme executive for Church Relations, elaborated on what it means to dive deeper below the waves, saying; “It is about finding concrete solutions together to make the world a better place across generations—not only as an empty dream but as a prophetic calling.”
