Message from the President of the Connectional Lay Organization on the United States November 5th Elections

Church of Allen – Laity in Ministry and Service:

We are two days away from "the most consequential election in our lifetime." This statement has been repeated so many times that those who disagree with the desired outcome can repeat it with conviction.

Watching the news and discourse from American media, there is significant disagreement about when "America was great" and "what the criteria are for being great." It is the perspective of those who enslaved and slaughtered innocent people that the contributions of the first families (Native Americans), the peoples of Africa, and migrants from Latin America that the United States did not benefit from the talents and cultures of these individuals.

Why would those who bear the brunt of discrimination, prejudice, involuntary servitude, slavery, and continued mistreatment collaborate and cooperate with their oppressors? Because of HOPE, this nation will one day live up to its promise: Justice, liberty, and freedom will indeed be for everyone.

The work of the African Methodist Episcopal Church's laity gives evidence to repeated efforts to make America a great nation truly. Calling the roll, we find Flora Allen, Sarah Allen, Sadie T. M. Alexander, A. Phillip Randolph, Roy Wilkins, Rosa Parks, Charlotte Maxeke, Vernon Jordan, Alcee Hastings, Stephanie Wilson, James Clyburn, Opal Lee, and so many others who would say two things to us today...

"Don't go back." We fought too hard to provide you with cover for times like these.

"It's Your Watch". It is your responsibility to protect those being harmed by those who seek personal gain at their expense.

Some fear the outcome of a vigorous fight for freedom. Others pretend not to care by declaring that everything is a big hoax. As people of faith, we know that action is a partnership with belief.

Be reminded that fear is a reaction. But as Christians, we are called to bravery, which is a decision. We have decided to follow Jesus, and we won't turn back.

I urge you to continue modeling what is right. Your brothers and sisters in the Motherland and in other parts of the world will stand with you on November 5, 2024, election day.

Prayerfully and Boldly in Jesus' Name,

Matikane Abednego Makiti
President
Connectional Lay Organization
