Prepare for three weeks of exploration of some of the important sites of the Southwest. Emphasis will also be on photography, journal writing, and discussion.

  • Week 1 - We focus on the pueblo periods and Southwest archaeoastronomy by hiking to ancient villages and petroglyph areas, including those in Bandelier National Monument and at the village of Tsankawi.
  • Week 2 - We turn to paleontology, the history of dinosaur discoveries at Ghost Ranch, including excavation in the world-famous Hayden quarry at the ranch and cataloging of the finds.
  • Week 3 We return to archaeology and delve into the history of Chaco Canyon (825 c.e to 1125c.e.), an internationally known complex of monumental Great Houses, ceremonial chambers, and astronomical observatories, which we’ll visit on an all-day field trip to central New Mexico.
