Highlights from 2024's College Conference @ Montreat

Highlights from College Conference @ Montreat! - Last month, we kicked off 2024 by welcoming 600 college students to the mountains during College Conference @ Montreat! Over the course of three days, these conferees engaged in deep discussion, worship, and community as they focused on the theme “necessary risks.” This theme encouraged them to recognize that there are times in each of our lives when God’s calling will lead us away from the familiar and the comfortable. More so, it challenged them to acknowledge that there are those whose risk is even greater than their own - but that by standing alongside those individuals in solidarity, they can help make God’s visions of love and justice alive in our world. Going beyond the conference theme, however, college conference gave these students an opportunity to experience transformation. Students left with their personal faith deepened and their relationship to the greater Church strengthened, and for that, we are immensely grateful!

Check Out More from our Keynote Speakers! - We were overjoyed to hear from two very insightful keynote speakers during this year’s conference. Rev. Teri McDowell Ott, editor of The Presbyterian Outlook, spoke of her experience ministering to individuals in the prison system and the inherent risks and rewards of that ministry. Meanwhile, Cole Arthur Riley, author of the recently released New York Times bestselling book Black Liturgies, reflected on the power of both hope and lament as avenues for justice. You can learn more about Teri’s work in her book, Necessary Risks: Challenges Privileged People Need to Face or in The Presbyterian Outlook. Cole publishes her writing and poetry regularly on Instagram @blackliturgies. You can also read more in her books This Here Flesh or Black Liturgies.
Save the date for next year's conference! - As in years past, College Conference @ Montreat will take place January 2-5, 2025. Next year’s theme is “Unimaginable Possibilities.”
