Is it OK To Take a Selfie With Your Ballot?

Before the rise of smartphones, the best way to announce to your friends and family that you had voted in an election was to tell them. But now that we have powerful internet-connected cameras at our fingertips, it’s more efficient to simply take a picture of yourself at the polls and post it to social media.

In 2016, astute readers asked us if it was even legal to take photos of your ballot and Snopes founder David Mikkelson posted a fact check with specific information about which states didn’t, at the time, allow ballot photos.

It’s been four years since the 2016 U.S. presidential election, and while some states’ laws have changed, our readers’ desire to know if they can show off their ballots online has not. Snopes reporter Nur Ibrahim has updated 2016’s fact check with up-to-date information.
