In an all-too-familiar reaction to the public outcry over the death of George Floyd, a Black man, while in the custody of Minneapolis police officers, some people took to reciting a litany of Floyd’s past arrests, as if to justify the actions of the police.
Snopes readers contacted us to ask if the lists of Floyd’s alleged offenses circulating online and off are accurate. In her investigation, reporter Jessica Lee not only examined court records but spoke to experts about why Black men in particular are so often reduced to the sum of their past mistakes instead of complex, whole human beings.
