Every so often a shocking “viral trend” captures the attention of the news media, prompting dire warnings about people harming themselves or others by doing crazy things and posting photos or videos online. Remember the “Tide Pod Challenge”?
Teenagers swallowing detergent for attention is one thing; white people filming themselves kneeling on one another’s necks to mock the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, while being restrained on the ground by a white police officer, is flagrantly offensive.
